Closed Landfills

Each of the Landfills within the County of Lambton has a capacity limit determined by the site-specific criteria, and established by the respective Certificates of Approval (CofA). When this limit has been reached the Landfills are closed and capped in accordance with the Ministry of the Environment directives appended to each CofA. Landfills are capped with a clay cover, to impede surface infiltration, overlayed with topsoil, and seeded with natural cover vegetation. County forces inspect each landfill several times each year to review the state of the cover vegetation, ensure that the cover remains intact and the site secure. In addition, a monitoring program is maintained to ensure that no adverse impacts are generated to the adjacent properties or the surrounding environment.
