Household Hazardous Waste Day in Sarnia

Sarnia, ON – A special mobile Household Hazardous Waste Day sponsored by the County of Lambton and Clean Harbors Inc. will be coming to Sarnia on Saturday, July 11, 2009 from 9am - 2pm at Lambton College's parking lot at 1457 London Road.

"The County of Lambton works with Clean Harbors Inc., to hold approximately six Household Hazardous Waste Days throughout the year at the Clean Harbors site on Telfer Road," said Glen Millar, Manager, County of Lambton Public Works Department.   "This is the third year where the County has offered a special mobile event to reach residents in other areas of the County that may not be in a position to drive to the regular events in St. Clair Township."

The mobile depot will accept a variety of household hazardous waste including:

• Corrosive Materials - batteries, drain cleaners, oven cleaners
• Toxic Materials - pesticides, rat poison, pharmaceuticals, cleaning fluids
• Reactive Materials - pool chemicals, ammonia, bleach, aerosols
• Flammable Materials - gasoline, paints, bbq starter, oils, solvents, propane cylinders

Computers and other electronics, explosives such as ammunition and marine flares, radioactive material (smoke detectors), and PCBs (old fluorescent ballasts) will not be accepted.

"Household Hazardous waste such as aerosols or chemicals or oils should never be disposed in a regular landfill site," said Millar.   "These materials are hazardous not only to the local environment, but also to the people who work at landfills."
