The following list gives a brief introduction to our current program offerings and highlights the connection of each with the Ontario Curriculum:
BACK TO SCHOOL, BACK IN TIME (grades 2 through 7)
Role-playing pioneer students in an authentic one-room schoolhouse will transport your students back in time. Students learn about schooling in the past, and then practice penmanship with pen and ink, read from “The Ontario Readers” series and copy their arithmetic lesson from blackboard to slate, to discover first-hand the challenges and enjoyments of a one-room school.
This program is excellent for use with the Grade 3 Pioneer Life topic in the Heritage & Citizenship strand in Social Studies. It is also used by many teachers to enrich the study of the setting of such novels as Anne of Green Gables or Sarah, Plain & Tall in Language. The role-playing component also makes this program useful in meeting expectations in the Drama and Dance curriculum for any grade. - (available year-round except mid-November to December)

LIFE IN A ONE-ROOM SCHOOL – IN-CLASSROOM PROGRAM (grades 2 through 7)
This program covers the same topics and hands-on activities as the above program, but instead of your class coming to our one-room schoolhouse, we bring this lesson to your classroom, to save you the cost of a bus (available in Lambton County only).
The primary/junior version of this program is excellent for use with the Grade 3 Pioneer Life topic in the Heritage & Citizenship strand in Social Studies. It is also used by many teachers to enrich the study of the setting of such novels as Anne of Green Gables or Sarah, Plain & Tall in Language. The intermediate version may be used in the study of the historical development of the community in the grade 7 topic of British North America.(available year-round)

BUSY AT HOME (grades 3 to 6)
The work of pioneer life becomes real for students as they visit the log cabin, wash clothes on a scrub board and dip a candle by hand from wax melted over an open fire. Visiting the log cabin allows students to see first hand many of the objects they have been learning about in studying pioneer life.
Perfect for use in the grade 3 Pioneer topic in the Heritage and Citizenship strand of Social Studies.
Also could be used in conjunction with Science & Technology in the Energy and Control strand for the grade 6 Electricity topic comparing our dependence on electricity to people in the past.(available May, June, September, October)

PIONEERS: THE ORIGINAL RECYCLERS (grade 3)
Nothing was wasted in the pioneer home. Pioneers reduced, re-used and recycled out of necessity. Every part of an animal or plant was put to use. Clothing was handed down to younger children, and then recycled into quilts or rugs when it could no longer be mended.
This program gives students the opportunity to explore the self-sufficient and non-wasteful lifestyle of the pioneers. Opportunities for hands-on activities such as trying a drop spindle and weaving a rag rug will bring the experience to life for the students.
Perfect for use in the grade 3 Pioneer topic in the Heritage and Citizenship strand of Social Studies.

CHILDHOOD MEMORIES (grades K to 4)
Visits are made to the log cabin and Victorian cottage where students learn about children’s lives during each time period, including playing some games of the day. Making a pioneer toy to take home is always a highlight.
This program may be used in comparing roles and responsibilities of family members in the past to the students’ lives today in the grade 1 Relationships, Rules and Responsibilities topic in the Heritage & Citizenship strand in Social Studies. (available May, June, September, October)

ALL HANDS ON DECK!! (grades 3 to 7)
This marine history program gives students the opportunity to better understand ships and shipwrecks. Students dramatize for their classmates the loss of a ship on the Great Lakes and learn more about marine equipment and roles of the crew. A videotape regarding the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is also included.
This program may be used in studies of the Great Lakes region in the Grade 4 Provinces and Territories of Canada topic in Social Studies, in conjunction with maritime-theme novel studies in Language, or in the Grade 5 Drama and Dance curriculum expectation "rehearse and perform small-group drama . . . presentations drawn from . . . other source materials".

APPLES (grades K to 4)
Students learn about the many uses settlers made of this popular fall fruit, while playing the apple peel game, making an apple wreath for their classroom and baking (and sampling!) apple crisp in the wood stove.

AN OLD-FASHIONED CHRISTMAS (grades JK to 6)
Your students will discover the simpler traditions of Christmas past as they enjoy a visit to our log cabin, decorated for Christmas, the fun of an old-time taffy pull, creating an old-fashioned decoration to take home and a tour highlighting pioneer and Victorian celebrations.
This program is excellent for use with JK/SK studies of Christmas, as well as the Grade 2 Traditions and Celebrations topic or the Grade 3 Pioneer Life topic in the Heritage & Citizenship strand of Social Studies.(available mid-November to Christmas break)
This program is often a sell-out; so please book early to avoid disappointment.

THE SETTLERS: A NEW LIFE IN CANADA (grade 3 - adaptable for others)
This multi-media educational resource kit has been newly re-designed for use in the Pioneer Life unit of Heritage and Citizenship in the grade 3 Social Studies curriculum. The kit contains photographs, pictures, artifacts, video, books, word-search puzzles and how-to sheets for various pioneer activities.
Cost: $15 per week if booked for pre- or post-visit use in conjunction with a museum program or $20 per week if booked alone.

CELEBRATING HARVEST TRADITIONS (Grades 2 & 3)
Autumn has arrived and the gardens and fields have been harvested. Food has been preserved for winter use. Join pioneer Mrs. Courtney as she makes preparations for Thanksgiving dinner to celebrate the harvest.
Students will experience first-hand some pioneer traditions as they assist in making corn bread and cranberry sauce using the wood stove. The Thanksgiving theme continues in the one-room schoolhouse, as students participate in a fall art activity and quill pen writing lesson.
This program is excellent for use with the Grade 2 Traditions and Celebrations topic or the Grade 3 Pioneer Life topic in the Heritage & Citizenship strand of Social Studies.

EXPLORING EARLY CAREERS (grade 3)
Engage your students in a day of exploring the lives and careers of the settlers. The teachers and parent volunteers will take their groups of students to visit the various homes and village buildings to meet the settlers at work. Some of the careers you may explore will be:
- blacksmith

- railroad conductor
- fireman
- minister
- farmer
- homemaker
- teacher

SETTLER “SAMPLER” (grades 2 to 6)
A guided tour of our heritage village gives your students the opportunity to learn about the life and work of the settlers. Visit the homes, blacksmith shop, railroad station, historic church, carpentry shop and fire hall. To maximize student interest and learning, choose the hands-on activities that best suit your class and its focus of study.
Activity options – choose one from each grouping:

- churn butter and sample it on fresh bread
- bake using the wood stove and sample the results
- make and take home a pioneer craft
- work with leather in the harness shop and make rope
- complete a lesson on a slate in the schoolhouse
- play an old-time recess game
