Oil Spings, ON - It’s already been a busy year celebrating the 150th anniversary of oil in Lambton County and there’s more in store. In fact, an influx of about 2,000 visitors may be coming on September 20 for the Doors Open Ontario Tour.

The Doors Open Ontario Tour has a very big draw because it is advertised across the whole province. The Oil Heritage District is one of eight new tours that has been added to the 54 tour Doors Open lineup for 2008. “There are lots of people throughout the province who visit as many tours as they can,” says Robert Tremain, curator of Lambton museums. “The fact that the Oil Heritage district is new to the Doors Open Ontario list is certain to draw some curious visitors from far away.”

Petrolia, Oil Springs and Sarnia will be featured in the Doors Open Ontario Tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Featured stops in Petrolia are: Victoria Hall (a National Historic Site), The Robert M. Nicols Library, VanTuyl and Fairbank Hardware Store, Baines Machine and Repair Works, and The Petrolia Discovery. In Oil Springs the stops are at two National Historic Sites; The Oil Museum of Canada and Fairbank Oil Properties. In Sarnia: the stops are The Imperial Oil Theatre, Lawrence House Centre for the Arts, and The University of Western Ontario Research Park, Sarnia-Lambton Campus.  (For more information visit www.firstoilwell.com)

Oil Celebrations continue through the fall. On September 27, there are two events; A reception for Lance Evoy’s photos of Oil Spring’s oil producers is open to the public and will be held at the Oil Springs Youth Centre from 2 to 4 p.m. These large black and white photos are currently exhibited in the windows of businesses in Oil Springs.

In the evening, the action swings to the Sarnia Library Theatre, for the Memories of Oil concert and fashion parade, with costumed performers of Petrolia Community Theatre portraying real Lambton oil characters re-enacting the Roll Call of the Oil Baron’s Ball. Singer-songwriter Bernie Gilmore will perform songs from his CD Oil Boom and Rick Redmond will step dance and perform on spoons. Tickets are $8 at the door and the performance begins at 7:30 p.m.

On October 3, Spirit Walk is back for an encore presentation at the Oil Museum of Canada. Writer-director Carol Graham has unearthed haunting true tales of Lambton’s oil days and Petrolia Community Theatre actors bring these tales to life. These are to be performed outdoors by lantern light if the weather permits. The performance is 7 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $10 and must be purchased in advance. They will be available in Petrolia at Contagious Crafts; in Oil Springs at The Oil Museum of Canada, Talula’s Café and the Village of Oil Springs; and in Sarnia they will be available at The Bookkeeper. A time must also be booked in advance by calling The Oil Museum of Canada at 519 834-2840. Only 100 tickets are available so people are encouraged to book early.

And on November 1, an Oil Patch Murder Mystery dinner will be hosted by the Oil Museum of Canada and held at the Oil Springs Youth Centre. It’s to be a night of fun, food and fantasy. Talula’s Café will be catering the dinner and tickets are $30.

For more information on any of these events, call The Oil Museum of Canada at 519 834-2840 or visit www.2008celebrate.com.
