Sarnia, ON – Whether you are walking, cycling or engaged in other activities, do everything you can to Be Safe Be Seen.
The South West Injury Prevention Network (SWIPN), a collaboration of community partners dedicated to preventing injuries, has designed Be Safe Be Seen to raise awareness for safe and healthy activities, including commuting and physical activity, and to ensure everyone can be seen by motorists.
The Be Safe Be Seen campaign is being launched this week.
"As the community promotes healthy, active lifestyles, more and more people will be out enjoying the beautiful weather, running, walking, cycling and playing," said Rae Whitton, Health Promotion Officer with County of Lambton Community Health Services Department. "SWIPN would like everyone to continue these activities for many years to come."
Summer can be a potentially deadly time for pedestrians. Over the last five years at London Health Sciences Centre, 156 pedestrians have been treated for severe injuries related to everyday activities. These injuries have occurred while walking to work, playing with friends, biking in the city and other healthy lifestyle choices.
"To Be Safe Be Seen take steps to keep yourself and your family safe," added Whitton. "Wear the appropriate gear, including a helmet. Make sure that you are visible to motorists, by wearing light/bright coloured clothes, reflective gear, use appropriate lights and be aware of motor vehicles. Each of us must take the responsibility to make sure our activities are safe."
