Sarnia, ON – Even though more than 40 Sarnia-Lambton residents have put themselves in the driver's seat on the road to tobacco-free living, more 'drivers' are needed for the 5th annual Driven to Quit Challenge.

Driven to Quit is a month-long challenge that encourages Ontario residents, 19 and over, to quit tobacco use for the month of March. After 31 days, those who remain smoke-free are eligible for prizes, including a 2010 Ford Escape hybrid, two $5000 vacation packages, and seven $2000 MasterCard gift cards.

"For someone who is thinking of quitting smoking, Driven to Quit may be the extra motivation they need to quit and to remain smoke-free," said Marie Chaves, Health Promotion Officer with the County of Lambton Community Health Services Department. "It is a win-win situation: better health and a chance to win great prizes."

The deadline to register is February 28. Smokers, who register before January 31, qualify to win a $1000 MasterCard gift card. Even those who quit January 1 are eligible to enter. To register, or for more information, contact the Community Health Services Department at 519 344-2062, toll free 1-800-387-2882 or online at www.driventoquit.ca.

Rules to enter are simple:

  • Open to residents of Ontario.
  • Must be 19 years of age or older as of March 1, 2010.
  • Use or used tobacco (cigarettes, cigars, pipes, chewing tobacco and/or snus) at least once weekly for a minimum of one year prior to January 1, 2010.
  • Get a buddy for support. A non-smoking buddy is preferable.

Buddies are eligible to win a $200 MasterCard gift card. All prizes are donated by McNeil Consumer Healthcare. Winners are randomly selected and will be announced in April.

For more than 15 years, the County of Lambton Community Health Services Department has offered FREE smoking cessation programs that have helped hundreds of people to quit smoking. Additional support is provided by the Canadian Cancer Society Smokers' Helpline at 1-877-513-5333 and www.smokershelpline.ca.
