Sarnia, ON –   Gallery Lambton is hosting a one-day opportunity to learn about the heart and soul of Sarnia-Lambton's art gallery - its permanent collection - on Saturday, May 15, 2010.

"Every art gallery's permanent collection represents the visual history of the community at the local, regional and national level," said Lisa Daniels, Curator, Gallery Lambton.   "During this one-day event, we will offer Lambton's residents an opportunity to learn more about our collection and its notable pieces."

Gallery Lambton will be open from 10 am - 5:30 pm, with talks by Daniels scheduled at 11 am, 1 pm and 3 pm.   She will also discuss the new construction project taking place on the corner of Christina and Lochiel Streets.

"This community has a unique story associated with its art collection that we love to tell and it impresses people every time," said Daniels.

Gallery Lambton's art collection began in 1920 with a group of visionary local women, the Sarnia Women's Conservation Art Association (SWCAA), who started to build the collection from funds raised through the sale of rags and scrap metal after the First World War. They also held art exhibitions at the Sarnia Library throughout the 1920s which gained national attention and became known as The Sarnia Art Movement.

In 1956, the SWCAA donated 26 works of art to the Sarnia Library Board and today Gallery Lambton's permanent collection boasts over 1,000 pieces, many of which are national treasures. In 1961 the art gallery was established on the second floor of the Sarnia Library and fifty years later, the community is preparing to celebrate a new era in the life of its public art gallery.

Up Close and Personal will feature all 26 of the works donated by the SWCAA including Chill November by Tom Thomson, Lily Pond by Vi Howard and The Lumberjack by Edwin Holgate.  Works by members of the Group of Seven and their contemporaries, including Lawren Harris, A.Y. Jackson, Arthur Lismer, Emily Carr, York Wilson, JS Halem and A.J. Casson will be on display. More recent artists will also be featured including David Blackwood, Christopher Pratt, Mary Pratt, Jack Chambers, David Milne, Guido Molinari and Ron Martin, among others.
