Sarnia, ON – Many people would find cycling after a twelve hour night shift a challenge, but for Henry Soininen it's a choice he makes on a regular basis.
"Henry Soininen cycles approximately 40 kilometres round trip to and from work each day," says Kelley Elliott, Health Promotion Officer with the County of Lambton Community Health Services Department. "This commitment to health and the environment earned Soininen the recognition as this year's County of Lambton Active Transportation Committee Clean Air Champion."
Soininen, a resident of Point Edward, cycles to Corunna approximately nine months of the year via a series of peaceful trails and back roads. Soininen cites the lower River Road trail as his favourite part of his commute alongside the St. Clair River and the many ships passing by.
Soininen is joined by Sarnia Transit awarded with this year's Clean Air Workplace Award.
Sarnia Transit earned the top workplace prize for the enhancement of all city buses equipped with bike racks to provide the public and workers options to utilize the transit system combined with active transportation choices. They also provide workplace bike racks for several of their employees who choose to cycle to work.
The Canadian Coast Guard & Fisheries & Oceans Canada workplaces receive an honorable mention because of the addition of secure, theft-proof bike lockers to their workplace.
Adult winners receive a $100 gift certificate from Green Communities Canada and Active & Safe Routes to School (ASRTS). ASRTS donated a tree to Sarnia Transit for their contributions.
