Sarnia, ON – After several weeks of extensive work on the interior of the former Thom Building in Downtown Sarnia, work is set to begin on the exterior of the building next week.

Over the past month, work crews have installed structural supports inside the building and have removed plaster and floor tiles containing asbestos, along with paint containing lead from the Thom Building.   This week, work crews are removing asbestos tar from the Thom Building roof and beginning June 7th, those passing by will notice changes to the exterior of the building.

"The mechanical demolition of the Annex - the former John Howard Society Building which is attached to the Thom Building - will take place resulting in a full street closure of Lochiel Street between Front and Christina Streets," said Dereck Holmes, Project Coordinator.  "We anticipate that this demolition work should take about a week to complete."

In the coming weeks as work continues, PCR Contractors will be using the side walk and parking spots on Lochiel Street as their construction staging area, where they will store necessary equipment and materials needed for the construction process.   "It is expected that this staging area will be sufficient to meet the contractor's normal needs; however, there may be times when it will be necessary to temporarily close more of Lochiel Street," said Holmes.

Once the demolition of the Annex is complete, work crews will then continue to remove any remaining asbestos containing roof tar from the Thom Building.  Starting June 14th, barriers will be installed on the Christina Street sidewalk to re-direct pedestrian traffic around the construction area.  Pedestrian traffic will be re-routed through a covered walkway.

Lambton's new art gallery is funded by the Government of Canada's Infrastructure Stimulus Program in the amount of $3 million, with an additional $2.6 million secured from the County of Lambton.  A fundraising campaign will continue with a goal of raising the final $3 million.
