Sarnia, ON – A 21st century treasure hunt is the perfect way for your family to discover that exercise is rewarding, and fun.
The County of Lambton Community Health Services Department has GPS (Global Positioning System) units for loan to the public for geocaching, a world-wide, treasure hunting game of hide and seek. Units are available to individuals, families, service groups, workplaces etc. on a weekly loan basis.
The objective of geocaching (pronounced Gee -O-cash -ing) is for a geocacher to hide a "treasure" somewhere in the world, pinpoint its location using GPS technology, and then share the geocache's existence and location online. Then, anyone with a GPS device can try to locate the treasure.
"Geocaching is a great way to increase your physical activity levels, and anytime anyone can increase physical activity while having fun in the great outdoors is an added bonus," says Paul Saunders, Health Promoter with Community Health Services. "Children and youth love this hi-tech form of the original scavenger hunt, and once you find one, it becomes addictive."
Geocaches vary in size and also in the level of "hidden" difficulty.
To view where geocaches are located in Sarnia-Lambton, residents can visit www.geocaching.comto uncover what's hidden in their neighbourhoods. It is free to join.
