Sarnia, ON – The landscape is starting to look a little different at 993 Maxwell Street in Sarnia, where a four-storey, 63,300 square foot affordable housing building is currently under construction.

Henderson Builders Ltd., the contractor who is overseeing the $10.8 million construction project, is now on-site daily excavating for foundations and forming footings.    With a 14 month schedule to fully complete the building, the contractor remains hopeful that the exterior could be complete by year-end.

"The designs for the building have experienced some minor modifications since their original unveiling last November," said Lola Dudley, Manager, County of Lambton Housing Services Department.  "The size of the units was slightly reduced and some features on the exterior have changed slightly, such as smaller peaks.  However, much of the building remains the same, including the number of units, the front door location, the existence of a community room and balconies."

This spring, the Housing Services Department offered members of the public an opportunity to name the building and it is anticipated that the winning submission, and the finalists, will be announced in September.   "We received 69 submissions and we will be reviewing these submissions over the summer months to narrow down the selection to the top three," said Dudley.  "I anticipate that the name will be announced at the September 1 meeting of Lambton County Council."

The winning submission will receive a $100 gift card for Lambton Mall and use of the Community Box at the RBC Centre during a regular season Sting hockey game.   Two semi-finalists will receive $50 gift cards for Lambton Mall.

This construction project was made possible through funding by the federal and provincial governments' Canada Ontario Affordable Housing Program, and the County of Lambton.
