Point Edward, ON – After a rewarding nursing career of 39 years, 37 in public health, Iris Murtha, Manager, Environmental Health and Prevention Services, will be retiring effective December 31, 2004.

“We will most certainly miss Iris’ knowledge, leadership, commitment, and skill,” said Ken Dick, General Manager of Social and Health Services.  “But after serving Lambton County’s residents for 39 years, we wish her nothing but the best in her retirement.”

Murtha began working with the public health unit in 1967 as a Staff Nurse.  Through progressive positions including: Prenatal Class Teacher, Team Coordinator, Senior Nurse, Nurse Coordinator, Supervisor of Nursing, Program Manager of Healthy Children, Preventative Services, Family Health Services, Child Health, and Manger of Environmental Health & Prevention Services, she made a significant contribution to public health in Lambton County.

The Community Health Services Department was not the only beneficiary of Iris' dedication.  Agencies and organizations such as the Sarnia Lambton Children’s Aid Society, Essex, Kent Lambton District Health Council, Canadian Mental Health Association, Sarnia Lambton Centre for Children and Youth, Petrolia and Area Family Enrichment Centre, Miss Helen’s Place and the Tri County Project for the Prevention of Developmental Disabilities have benefited from Murtha’s commitment to the residents in our community.

The County of Lambton will begin searching for a new Manager of Environmental Health & Prevention Services shortly.

Environmental Health and Prevention Services protects the public’s health by ensuring good water quality, safe food handling, and by preventing and responding to outbreaks of infectious disease.  Other programs include rabies prevention, health hazard investigations, enforcement of the Tobacco Control Act and emergency response.  The team also provides programs and clinical services for children’s immunization as well as the Universal Flu Shot Program, in addition to travel clinics, family planning clinics and STD/AIDS clinics.
