Sarnia, ON - Who would have ever considered high school cafeteria food healthy, let alone award winning? That’s all changed.
This year, three area high school cafeterias – St. Patrick’s High School, St. Clair Secondary School and Lambton Central Collegiate Vocational Institute - are among the 21 local restaurants and cafeterias to be awarded the prestigious Ontario Eat Smart! Award at the 5th Annual Eat Smart! Awards of Excellence on November 16.
The ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. at the County of Lambton, Community Health Services Department, 160 Exmouth St., Point Edward.
“We are thrilled to have a number of high school cafeterias qualifying for this award,” says Connie Mallette, Registered Dietitian at the County of Lambton Community Health Services Department. “It’s great to see restaurants, schools and workplace cafeterias join the ranks of Eat Smart! establishments.”
Mallette says “Not only is the province making changes to the foods offered in elementary schools, but local schools are taking the initiative to create a healthier food environment.”
Eat Smart! Ontario’s Healthy Restaurant and Cafeteria Program recognizes restaurants and cafeterias that meet exceptional standards in safe food handling, healthy food choices and smoke-free seating. Eat Smart! is offered by the Community Health Services Department, Healthy Living Lambton, Heart & Stroke Foundation of Ontario and Canadian Cancer Society, Ontario Division.
