The County of Lambton Public Works Department is moving forward with Lambton County's first modern roundabout at the intersection of County Rds 7 and 26 (Lakeshore and Mandaumin Roads). This intersection has experienced a large increase in traffic volumes in recent years due to the expansion of development in Bright's Grove and Pympton-Wyoming. Increased volumes have lead to unacceptable delays for vehicles moving through the intersection necessitating improved control measures.
After evaluating all of the available alternatives the County elected a roundabout installation. These installations reduce the number of potential vehicle conflict points from 32 to 8 by eliminating left turn movements.
Added benefits include but are not limited to:
- Speed reduction
- Reduced accident severity
- Lower vehicle emission by reducing idling.
- Elimination of crossing traffic
- Constant traffic flow
- Improved intersection appearance (aesthetics)
- Reduced light pollution
The Department recognizes that this type of installation is a drastic change from standard practice in this area but motorists tend to easily adapt to the new installation.
