County Mailbox Policy
The County of Lambton is committed to providing its residents with a safe and efficient roadway. During the winter season increased maintenance is required to maintain an acceptable level of service for the travelling public. Unfortunately, winter patrol activities may damage mailboxes or other private features within the County road allowance. In the event that private mailboxes are damaged or destroyed due to a collision between the mailbox and the winter maintenance vehicle, as determined by the County, the County will pay full compensation to the owner for the repair or replacement of the mailbox, to a limit of $50.00. However, the County will bear no cost for the repair of replacement of mailboxes damaged or destroyed as a result of the displacement of snow from the roadway and the fulfillment of the County's obligations to the travelling public. As such, it is the responsibility of individual residents to ensure that mailboxes are constructed in a suitable location and are maintained in good order.
The erection and identification of rural mailboxes shall conform to the following specifications:
- The mailbox supports shall be wooden and restricted to a maximum of six (6) inches in diameter.
- The mailbox is to be placed along the right hand side of the road according to the courier's line of travel at a setback distance of 2 metres (8 feet) from the edge of pavement.
- The box is securely attached to a fixed post or cantilever arm and the bottom of the box is 1 metre (3.5 feet) above the roadway.
- The mailbox is to be identified by having the name of each box holder printed in indelible lettering not less than 1 inch high on the side of the box visible to the courier
